9 BUDGET (and stylish!) FINDS TO SPRUCE UP YOUR LAUNDRY

By Mirelle Macdonald

Piles of laundry… some dirty, some clean. Odd socks. The overflowing ironing basket (if you bother to iron). I can’t remember a time I ever jumped for joy at the thought of hanging out in my laundry….

….Until now. Collect some of these cool and stylish pieces to complete your laundry look and make it – dare I say – more inviting. The countless hours a week you spend in there may seem a little bit more bearable and you may just throw the door open for guests to see your styling – and even want to hang out there (gasp).

1. Hot and Steamy ironing board cover

I’m already having fun! The Hot and Steamy ironing board cover from PillowTalk ($24.95), doesn’t have to be on show, but is at least an easy way to get you smiling in the most practical room of the house.

2. Peg basket

Add a touch of vintage charm to your peg basket. These cute options (from $29.95) at Bed Bath ‘N Table, beat the big, stock-standard plastic ones. They even hold enough pegs so you can hang a few loads of washing at a time.

3. The Jimmy ladder

Put some magazines or towels on display and use Mocka’s Jimmy ladder ($29.95) as a practical spot to hang work shirts and dresses before ironing. Smart…and pretty.

4. Wicker hamper

For all those extra odds and ends, try using a couple of attractive baskets to help collect the clutter. These wicker hampers, from Bed Bath ‘N Table, will pop off any white wall in a laundry (all sizes are under $50.00). These wouldn’t have to be confined to living in the laundry either – they’re also a great basket for transporting clothes back to bedrooms.

5. Update your towel range

Fresh, plush towels stacked in your laundry cupboard are a must. Shaynna Blaze’s range of towels, available now at Harris Scarfe, are a solid choice to put on display, thanks to the great range of colours and detailing.

6. Glass prism terrarium

Breathe some life into your bench space by adding a terrarium in bronze or brass and planting some succulents in it. These are very easy to maintain and a bit of greenery always freshens up a laundry. It could sit sink-side near your soap dispenser, if you’re stuck for places to put it. Find these pretty options at Bed Bath ‘N Table (priced from $24.95).

7. Collapsible hamper

No laundry is complete without a great washing basket. The Morgan and Finch Collapsible laundry basket, from Bed Bath ‘N Table, has both square or rectangle options ($59.95). There’s also a canvas insert to easily transfer washing from bedroom to laundry or vice versa.

8. Vintage laundry boxes

If your laundry powder is on show, try using these Bed Bath ‘N Table laundry boxes.  They’ll sit nicely on the laundry bench, beat the product packaging and match any décor.

9. Soap dispenser

Try to create a stylised area for your soap dispenser – it will make the laundry appear more homely in an instant. This dispenser by Bed Bath ‘N Table ($29.95) is a great option.
